The Academic English Language Learners (ELL) Program is designed for students who already speak English and want to prepare for college-level courses.

Classes focus on:

  • Reading college-level texts and academic journals
  • Writing essays and research papers
  • Listening to lectures and taking notes
  • Giving formal presentations
  • Strengthening academic vocabulary and grammar

Our instructors use a communicative approach that builds confidence and helps you succeed in school, at work, and in everyday life.

We also host monthly socials where you can:

  • Meet other students
  • Learn more about Gateway ELL
  • Connect with college resources

Developmental Level

  • ESL 11: Beginning Speaking and Listening
  • ESL 90: Beginning Writing
  • RDG 41: ESL Reading Laboratory
  • ESL 91: Intermediate Writing

College-Level (for credit)

  • ESL 100: Listening for Academic Purposes
  • ESL 120: Reading for Academic Purposes
  • IRW: Integrated Reading and Writing (designed to support English 101)

Morning and afternoon options may be available, depending on placement.

  1. Apply to Gateway
  2. Submit transcripts
    • If you completed high school in the U.S., submit official transcripts.
    • If you completed high school outside the U.S., submit a copy of your diploma (translation not required).
    • If you attended college or university, submit official transcripts. International transcripts may need evaluation. Contact us for details.
  3. Apply for financial aid
  4. Take the ESL MEPT test
    • All new ESL students take this placement test before registering. The test covers writing, reading, grammar, and listening.
    • To schedule your test, please use this link https://www2.registerblast.com/gctc/Exam/List and select Michigan Language Assessment-MEPT from the drop down menu or call 859-441-4500.
  5. Meet with an advisor
    • After testing, you’ll meet with an advisor to select your classes.
