Student Awards

The Dean’s List recognizes the academic excellence of students according to the KCTCS Rules of Senate for the fall semester, spring semester and summer term.

For the Fall and Spring semesters, a full-time Gateway student must earn at least a 3.5 grade point average (GPA) and successfully complete 12 hours or more of course work numbered 100 or above for the academic term being recognized.

A part-time Gateway student must complete three to 11 credits of course work numbered 100 and above for the academic term being recognized and earn a cumulative 3.5 GPA after successfully completing a cumulative total of at least 15 KCTCS semester credits of course work numbered 100 and above.

For the summer semester, a Gateway student must earn at least a 3.5 GPA after successfully completing six hours or more of course work numbered 100 or above for the academic term being recognized.

Please note that the above KCTCS Senate Rules criteria replaces the misprint in the student catalog.

A congratulatory letter will be sent by mid-term of the subsequent semester, in the form of an email, from the President of the college regarding the achievement of making the Dean’s List.  As a memento of the celebration, certificates will only be given to students who attend the Dean’s List Social.

We recognize outstanding student achievement during Night of Excellence. Students are nominated by faculty for most awards. Recognition is based primarily on academic and technical excellence, leadership, and service to the community, college or fellow students. Members of Phi Theta Kappa, the National Technical Honor Society, Phi Rho Pi forensic society and scholarship recipients also are recognized at the event. For additional information, check with your program advisor.

The Outstanding Graduate Award is presented at commencement to a Gateway graduate who has made significant contributions to the overall development of the college or KCTCS. Students are nominated by faculty and staff. Then, they are evaluated by a committee of faculty and staff, and recommendations are sent to the college president for final selection.

A student committee forms annually to manage the Student Choice Awards process that recognizes outstanding performance by faculty and staff. Students nominate faculty and staff members for the awards, which are announced at commencement. To be nominated, faculty and staff members must:

  • Express respect, care and genuine concern for students;
  • Create an atmosphere where students can participate in their learning experience;
  • Go above and beyond normal expectations that students have for faculty and staff.

The student committee forms annually in the spring. If you are interested in serving, contact Sarah Young at (859) 442-1639.

Gateway will recognize the commitments of the Gateway community by awarding the DEI Kuumba awards. Kuumba, in Swahili, means to do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it. The Kuumba principle demands continuous improvement in personal family, and social matters.
