Gateway Wellness
Social Wellness
Social Wellness consists of allowing students to improve their ability to work as a group and engage with other students. Social Wellness also includes initiatives that encourage faculty, staff, students, and future students to attend fun events and gain awareness. Additionally, there are opportunities to connect with the Gateway community and community members.
Resources
Networking and Connections: Social Connect is a student networking opportunity to help students connect. The meetups often consist of themed topics and interests. This also allows students to meet community partners based on our customized student topics.
Success Coaching: Students have the opportunity to work with a success coach to help them navigate college by receiving support and resources such as study tables, academic coaching, referrals to non-academic support services, etc.
English As A Second Language (ESL): Students can be connected to a course or program used to teach English to non-English speakers.
Social Support Groups and Mentoring: Our wellness program offers support groups and mentoring for students. This allows them to connect with others who they have things in common with such as single parents, parents of children with special needs, different social groups, circles of friends, etc.
Student Leadership:
- Our wellness program hosts leadership workshops available to all students. Students can learn key leadership and communication skills that will help them thrive in their personal and professional lives.
- Our wellness program offers student ambassadors leadership opportunities. Wellness ambassadors help promote program services, assist with coordinating events, and lead presentations.
Emotional Wellness
Emotional Wellness offers training to help students learn about mental health topics such as suicide prevention, mental health concerns, mental health warning signs, domestic violence education, support services, substance abuse, etc.
Resources
Counseling Services: Provide support to students struggling with non-academic issues and mental health. Counseling Services' role is to empower students and to assist them in overcoming barriers. Students can receive crisis intervention, personal support, therapeutic case management, individual counseling, and more resources.
Mental Health Support Groups: Our counseling department offers and connects students to support groups for different mental health or relationship concerns such as domestic violence, anxiety, depression, healthy relationships, etc.
Strength Based Support: Students can be assigned to a case manager as a form of success coaching to develop skills and empowerment that help them identify and resolve their own needs and encourages them to explore internal and community resources as needed.
Spiritual Wellness
Spiritual Wellness help students learn more about themselves on a deeper level through opportunities to learn practices related to meditation, mindfulness, self-exploration to help learn their true values and morals, and acceptance with life circumstances that are out of a person’s control.
Intellectual Wellness
Intellectual Wellness offers opportunities to help students learn creative skills and talents such as painting, music, dance, etc. Participants have the ability to participate in our fun activities and can be connected to community resources that can lead to creative opportunities.
Physical Wellness
Physical Fitness: Physical wellness plays an important role in how we feel and how we function in our every day lives including school, work, home, and social engagements. Faculty, staff, and students are welcome to attend our physical wellness workshops and classes. Physical success coaching is open to all students.
Nutrition: Nutrition is an important part of living a healthy life. Students can meet with a nutritionist to help learn healthy ways of eating and receive a tailored diet plan to help them achieve their health goals. Faculty, staff, and students are welcome to attend these workshops and classes. Nutrition success coaching is open to all students.
Food Pantry: Gateway has a food pantry run by our Student Resources program on each campus. Our pantry provides students with access to food and other necessities such as hygiene products and diapers.
Environmental Wellness
Our wellness program offers service-learning opportunities that encourage students to join or participate in environmental projects such as gardening. We also encourage students to volunteer with community agencies and businesses. Faculty are welcome to implement a service-learning project into their course curriculum if they see fit.
Financial Wellness
Our financial wellness activities are run by our Student Resource and Peer Mentor programs. Our financial resources help students with housing, childcare, SNAP benefits, food pantry access, budgeting education, and education to help prevent financial crisis.
Emergency Funds: The Student Success Emergency Fund was developed to help students who are in immediate need/facing barriers and don’t have the resources to overcome them. These funds are not meant to provide students with ongoing help or help that is otherwise available through local, state, and federal resources. These funds are to be used for true emergencies related to the following: housing, food, transportation, childcare (without vouchers), school supplies (without awarded financial aid), utilities, and documented medical need. Authorized counseling staff are charged with making the final decision as to whether the presenting factors meet assistance criteria.
Occupational Wellness
Explore different industries, try out various skills, and find your true calling with our Occupational Wellness activities. Our wellness program refers all students in need of career assessments, job opportunities, internships, and apprenticeships to Gateway’s Career Pathways program.
