Gateway receives truck donation for CDL program

CDL Truck and donor Gary Percy 2016Today, Gateway Community and Technical College received a tractor and trailer valued at $50,000 donated by Gary and Matt Percy of A.D. Transport Express, Inc. based in Canton, Michigan. This truck will be used for training in Gateways Commercial Drivers License (CDL) program.

We are very grateful to Mr. Percy and A.D. Transportation for this very generous donation. It is a great addition to our transportation technologies program, said Dr. Fernando Figueroa, president/CEO Gateway Community and Technical College. Were looking forward to providing more training opportunities for those interested in entering this high demand field.

Gateway began the CDL program in 2015. To date, 81 students have enrolled in the program and received training. This full-time CDL course, the only one of its kind in Northern Kentucky, is designed for those with little or no commercial driving experience who are interested a high pay, high demand field, or for companies seeking CDL certification for employees.

During four weeks of instruction in the classroom, yard and on the road, students will learn map-reading, trip-planning, DOT rules/regulations/log books, and are trained in vehicle operation.

The next CDL class begins Sept. 6. The classes start on the first Monday of each month, except during the month of December. Applicants must be at least eighteen years of age and able to pass a federal Department of Transportation (DOT) physical and drug test to qualify.

Tuition is $4,000.00 and includes instruction, permit, license fees for driving test administered by the Kentucky State Police, DOT physical and drug test. Job placement assistance is also available for those who successfully complete the training. Some may qualify for Workforce Investment Act (WIA) funding.
