UK College Of Nursing Names Gateway Dean

Dr. Gail E. Wise, associate provost and dean of nursing and allied health at Gateway Community & Technical College, has been named an outstanding alumna by the University of Kentucky College of Nursing (UKCN) as part of that colleges 50th anniversary celebration.

Dr. Wise is one of 51 UKCN graduates who were recognized for their accomplishments and contributions within the Commonwealth of Kentucky and across the nation. UKCN has 5,000 alumni.

We are very proud of the work that Dr. Wise has accomplished in leading our nursing and allied health programs at Gateway, said Dr. Ed Hughes, Gateway president and CEO. She has established herself through her dedication and excellence as a leader in the nursing and healthcare fields not only in Northern Kentucky but across the Commonwealth. I am delighted that the University of Kentucky College of Nursing honored her.

Dr. Wise earned bachelor and master of science degrees in nursing from UK, as well as a doctoral degree. She began her career as a staff nurse and served in management positions in acute care and community nursing. For the majority of her professional career, Dr. Wise has been involved in nursing education. She has both administrative and teaching expertise as a technical, associate degree, baccalaureate, and graduate degree educator.

Her appointment to the Kentucky Board of Nursing in 2004 and reappointment in 2008 recognizes her stature in the healthcare field. As a board member, she has chaired the education committee since 2005. She has been actively involved in many professional organizations, such as the Kentucky Nurses Association, Nurses Christian Fellowship, American Association of Heart Failure Nurses, and American Public Health Association.

In 2001 she developed the Kentucky Christian University Baccalaureate School of Nursing and received Kentucky Board of Nursing approval and accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

A resident of Mays Lick, Ky., Dr. Wise is certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center in community health nursing and nursing professional development and has published several articles. She is an American Heart Association affiliate faculty and has acted as a consultant in various community and acute care facilities, volunteered in community activities and has acquired funding for multiple grant proposals.

"Each of the alumni who were honored are an important part of the Colleges legacy, said Jane Kirschling, dean of the UK College of Nursing. Their contributions over the years exemplify that UK nursing alumni are committed to nursing excellence and that individually and collectively they make a difference in the lives of those they serve.
