Gateway Students Can Transfer to Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science

Gateway Community & Technical College and the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science have signed an articulation agreement that will enable Gateway graduates to complete a bachelors degree at CCMS in only 16 months.

Students interested in a bachelor's degree in mortuary science must complete 52 credit hours of prerequisites prior to enrolling at CCMS. CCMS does not offer prerequisite courses, focusing on upper division courses only. Beyond the prerequisites, a student needs only three more courses for an associate degree from Gateway.

Students who earn an Associate in Science degree at Gateway must complete 60 credit hours, 52 of which apply directly to the prerequisites CCMS requires, said Gateway President/CEO Ed Hughes. People interested in mortuary science can complete a Gateway AS degree in two years and then earn a bachelors degree at CCMS in 16 months.

"The new agreement demonstrates the collaborative efforts being made in higher education to better serve our students and communities in the tri-state, said Gene Kramer, CCMS president. Gateway's Associate in Science degree student can now transfer directly into CCMSs mortuary science programs. CCMS looks forward to a long-term relationship with Gateway."

Mortuary science is a fast-growing field. Kramer said many students have job offers before completing their studies. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median annual salary for morticians, undertakers and funeral directors for 2012 was $38,800 in the state of Kentucky and $49,900 for Ohio.

Most tri-state residents can attend Gateway at the in-state Kentucky tuition rate. Since our tuition compares so favorably with other regional institutions, we believe Gateway is the most economical path for a student to enroll at CCMS, said Mike Rosenberg, Gateway director of transfer. The Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science was founded in 1882 and moved from Victory Parkway to its current location on North Bend Road in 1995. The college is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and the North Central Association. More information about CCMS is available at http://www.ccms.edu/view/home.aspx.
