Gateway Community & Technical College will feature rising young poet Brandon Xplicit
Thornton at a Poetry Jam Feb. 13 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at the colleges Edgewood Campus,
790 Thomas More Parkway. The performance is part of Gateway's observance of Black
History Month.
A former college math instructor, Xplicit is a slam poet who draws inspiration for
his work from life experience. His performances feature poems about financial responsibility,
credit cards, family and relationship struggles, responsible college living and Black
history. He has performed at more than 100 college campuses in the past two years
and recently released a CD entitled Life After Poetry.
In addition to his poetry career, Xplicit, who lives in St. Louis, remains active
in the community by mentoring young men through Big Brothers Big Sisters and other

Xplicits performance at Gateway is free and open to the public. The event will take
place in the Student Services Center, Room E101. Limited seating is available on a
first-come, first-served basis. Seats will be reserved for members of the humanities

The performance precedes Gateway's primary Black History Month event known as Super
Sunday. This recruiting fair will take place Feb. 24 at the colleges Covington Urban
Center, 525 Scott Boulevard, at 1 p.m. With involvement from several local African
American congregations, Gateway hosts the afternoon open house to provide admissions,
financial aid, academic program and other information to participants.
Super Sunday is free and open to the public. It is part of a statewide effort by the
Kentucky Community and Technical College System to encourage African Americans and
