Gateway Hosts Special Super Sunday Recruiting Fair At Urban Center Feb. 27

Gateway Community & Technical College is sponsoring its first Super Sunday recruiting fair February 27 at 3 p.m. at its Urban Center in downtown Covington. The event is part of a statewide outreach by the Kentucky Community and Technical College System to increase the college enrollment of African Americans and other students of color.

Gateway is partnering locally with Grace of God Ministries to promote the event among area churches to reach as many prospective students as possible. In addition, Gateway President and CEO G. Edward Hughes has been invited by Bishop Nerrick Jackson to participate in the 11 a.m. worship service at the church at 1402 Beemon Lane in Florence.

The recruiting fair will feature information on admissions, financial aid, a variety of academic programs, student success services, disability services, and student employment programs known as Ready to Work and Work and Learn. Information will also be available on the Governors Minority Student College Preparation Program.

Studies have shown that 80 percent of today's jobs require a college degree and most of those require an associate degree, said Dr. Hughes. We want all students to know that, yes, college is within their reach and that a college credential is what will lead them to a high-paying job in a viable industry.

Super Sunday will help Gateway spread this message locally while our 15 sister colleges spread it throughout the state, he added. The fair also gives us an opportunity to show the entire community the educational opportunities that exist at Gateway, particularly at the Urban Center where enrollment has exploded by more than 1,000 percent in just four semesters.

Gateway's student population is growing more diverse as well. Minority student enrollment increased about 19 percent in Fall 2010, compared to the prior year, and accounted for about 12 percent of Gateway's total fall enrollment of 4,799 students.

Were going to have some food, were going to have some fun, and were going to provide lots of valuable information on Sunday, Dr. Hughes said. We encourage anyone interested in going to college to stop by the Urban Center at 3 p.m.

Gateway's Urban Center is located at 525 Scott Boulevard in Covington. To read more about Super Sunday, visit kctcs.edu.
