Gateway Expands Student Services At Its Urban Center In Downtown Covington

Gateway Community & Technical College is expanding student services available at its Urban Center in downtown Covington by relocating Student Support Services (SSS) to the center on 525 Scott Boulevard.

The relocation is part of Gateway's ongoing expansion of services to urban students, said Leonard Thompson, SSS director.

SSS is a federally funded program designed to help qualifying students succeed in college. Available services include academic advising; short-term academic, career and personal counseling; tutoring; assistance in applying for financial aid; cultural enrichment opportunities; and a variety of workshops.

SSS is funded through a $1.2 million, recently renewed TRIO grant that provides support services for students with disabilities or low-income, first-generation college students. The purpose is to increase college retention and graduation rates of participants. The grant renewal extends services through August 2015.

Previously located at Gateway's Edgewood Campus, the services are now offered on a daily basis on the second floor of the Urban Center. Services are available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays.

An SSS counselor will be available at the colleges main Covington Campus at 1025 Amsterdam Road from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays and at the Edgewood Campus from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursdays.
