Gateway Appoints Schutzman Dean of Workforce Solutions

Carissa Schutzman of Villa Hills, Ky., was recently named dean of Workforce Solutions at Gateway Community & Technical College, according to Angie Taylor, Gateway vice president of Workforce Solutions and innovations.

In this role, Schutzman is responsible for collaborating with Gateway's business, industry, and secondary education partners to develop programs and services designed to spur workforce development and preparation. A major part of her role involves creating initiatives to increase the pool of qualified candidates for manufacturing jobs.

Carissa's track record as a faculty member and division chair at Gateway, as a writer and editor covering technical education issues at both Northern Kentucky Technical College and Northern Kentucky University, and as an independent communication contractor make her uniquely qualified for this position, Taylor said. She understands workforce issues, the role of higher education, and the importance of high school educators in preparing students at the beginning of the workforce pipeline.

Schutzman is an award-winning educator. In 2012, she was honored by her Gateway peers as the colleges nominee for statewide recognition as the outstanding faculty member in the annual New Horizons excellence program conducted by the Kentucky Community and Technical College System. She received a similar honor as recently as November from the Greater Cincinnati Consortium of Colleges and Universities.

Schutzman joined Gateway in 2008 as an adjunct faculty member and more recently served as chair of the colleges developmental education division. She has served on seven internal college committees and contributed her expertise to numerous hiring committees for the college.

Schutzman received a bachelor of arts degree from Centre College in Danville, Ky., and a master of arts from Northern Kentucky University. She is pursuing a doctoral degree from the University of Kentucky in education policy and evaluation in higher education.
