Gateway has received approval from the Kentucky Department of Labor registering its NKY FAME apprenticeship program, making it the first registered Kentucky Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (KY FAME) apprenticeship program in the state.
The NKY FAME program is a partnership of regional manufacturers whose purpose is to implement career pathway, apprenticeship-style educational programs that will create a pipeline of highly skilled workers.
Registered apprenticeships through NKY FAME are full-time, paid employment and training with career placement built in. The NKY FAME program allows participants to learn in a hands-on environment. Apprentices spend two days per week in the classroom at Gateway and three days per week at their sponsoring employer performing value-added work.
After completing the NKY FAME program, graduates receive a nationally recognized industry credential and the employer gains a well-qualified worker with know-how specific to their industry.
“Registered apprenticeship training is a vital part of the economic wellbeing of the northern Kentucky region,” said Dr. Fernando Figueroa, Gateway president and CEO. “The better trained our students are, the more productive employees they will be, and the better businesses can compete in today's global market.”
By registering the apprenticeship program Gateway ensures that program components and competencies meet national standards for quality and rigor, and apprentice’s skills are well honed and relevant.
The Education and Workforce Development Cabinet has apprenticeship program standards that are in conformance with federal and state laws governing apprenticeship. These standards are used to register all apprenticeship programs in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
