Gateway Community & Technical College had two students receive scholarships at the Hispanic Chamber of Cincinnati’s gala event on Nov. 1 at Jack Casino. Fredy Alvarez and Olvia Valdovinos both received scholarships from the Hispanic Chamber of Cincinnati Foundation and were honored during the gala.

“It is inspiring to witness our students receiving these well-deserved scholarships,” said Kristen Smitherman-Voltaire, director of diversity, inclusion, and community engagement at Gateway. “We are excited to see the difference Fredy and Olvia will make in our region.”

The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Foundation scholarship program recognizes Hispanic and Latino students attending colleges and universities in greater Cincinnati. The intent is to recognize and honor the achievements of Hispanic and Latino students and to inspire others like them to pursue a higher education.

To be considered for the scholarship, students must be Hispanic or Latino of origin or descent; be U.S. citizens, legal permanent residents, or be granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals; and be residents of greater Cincinnati. Recipients are required to be enrolled as a full-time student, have a 3.0 GPA or higher, and a score a minimum of 22 on the ACT test. Applicants are also required to submit an essay explaining his/her heritage, involvement in the Hispanic community, and the financial benefit of being awarded the scholarship.

Recipients of the scholarship have proven leadership at school and/or within the community. They must also commit to volunteer 20 hours throughout the year at the Hispanic Chamber of Cincinnati.
