82 schools from accross the county attended this tourament. Gateway student Stewart Newburger won the award of Best Presiding Office for his session of Student Congress. To win this award, Newburger had to run for, and be elected by, the other members of his session of student congress. A different presiding officer was elected for each of the three rounds of competition. Then all the presiding officer's performances were judged against each other, and Newburger won for his session.
This markes the fourth time the Gateway Speech Team has competed in the PKD National Championship Tournament, but Newburger's win is the first time a team member has won an award in any event.
