Gateway adds new welding certifications
Published on Jan 2, 2017
Gateway Community & Technical College adds six new welding certifications.
Students may now earn welder helper, gas welder, ARC cutter, shielded metal arch welding,
gas medal ARC welding and gas Tungsten ARC welding certificates. These are in addition
to the combination welder, tack welder, production line welder and ARC welder certificates
Gateway offers. Students may also stack these certificates to earn an associate in
applied science in welding technology degree. In December 2015, Gateway was named
an AWS training and certification site, expanding opportunities for Gateway welding students and potential employers.
“Gateway recognizes the need for qualified welders and has redesigned our welding
program to meet industry demand,” stated Gateway President Dr. Fernando Figueroa.
"Credentialing specific areas of training and education acknowledges achievement and
presents a tangible verification to present to employers,” said Will Donahue, Gateway
welding instructor and program coordinator. “This valuable to students and employers.”
In addition to the new certifications, in November, Gateway hosted the first American
Welding Society Northern Kentucky Student Chapter meeting. These Northern Kentucky
chapter meetings are an opportunity to learn the latest welding news and connect with
others who share a passion for welding and metal working. The next meeting will be
at Gateway’s Boone Campus in March 2017. Lincoln Electric will be the guest speaker
and presenter.
Classes begin Jan. 9. For more information about Welding Technology at Gateway contact will.donahue@kctcs.edu or at
