What is the EMS-ADN Examination?

The HESI EMS-ADN Entrance Exam is a 50-item exam designed to be used for Paramedics seeking entrance into an Associate Degree of Nursing program.

What is the content of the exam? 

Test items are normed on EMS-ADN population.

Measures competencies across LPN content areas, including:

  • Fundamentals
  • Medical-Surgical
  • Pharmacology
  • Physical Assessment
  • Maternity
  • Pediatric 
  • Psychiatric/Mental Illness

What is the recommended score?

Paramedic to RN students must demonstrate retained competence, as nursing courses are designed to build on previous courses.  Retained competency is demonstrated by achieving a recommended score is 750.  If you do not achieve the recommended score, you may still apply to the nursing program. 

How Can I Prepare? 

The PN is particularly about content from your LPN background, identifying your strengths and weaknesses in clinical practice. There is no test prep material.  

When can I take the HESI EMS-ADN?

You can take the HESI EMS-ADN only once a year.  Registration for the HESI EMS-ADN Exam opens January 15.  Applications are due by March 31.   We recommend taking the exam at the latest, a week before the application deadline.

When will I receive my HESI EMS-ADN scores?

Exam scores are available immediately after completion of the exam. You can login to your Evolve account to access your scores.

How long are my HESI EMS-ADN exam scores valid?

Scores will be valid for 18 months from the time of exam completion.

Can I retest?

There are no retakes.  However, if you do not achieve the recommended score, you may still apply to the nursing program.  You must wait until the next application period to test again.

Do I have to take HESI EMS–ADN if I have a degree already?

Students who have obtained a doctoral, master, bachelors, and/or a certificate are still required to take the HESI Assessment exam.  All students applying to the Associate Degree Nursing Program through the Advance Standing EMS-ADN track are required to take the HESI EMS-ADN Exam, no exceptions.

What is the cost?

The cost of the HESI EMS-ADN Exam is $49 at Gateway’s Assessment Center and must be paid at the time of scheduling. When registering for the exam, be prepared with a debit/credit card.

Exam purchase is NOT REFUNDABLE OR TRANSFEREABLE to another test date.

What Do I Need?

You must:

  • Arrive 15 minutes before appointment time
  • Bring one form of valid, non-expired, government-issued identification (driver’s license, state identification, or passport).
  • Have an Evolve account. Click here to create your Evolve account.
  • Bring your Evolve username and password to the exam.

Note: All candidates will be required to login to their Evolve account to take the Exam.

  2. Choose an Exam

      Ensure the name on the registration matches the name on the valid ID you will be presenting to take the exam.
  3. Read and fill out the rest of the categories as necessary. You will be able to choose your test date/time here. Please be sure to read all items carefully.
  4. Add to cart when finished, and complete payment.

How do I create my Evolve Account?

Ensure the name on the account matches the name on the valid ID you will be presenting to take the exam.

If you have a KCTCS email, you must use your KCTCS email to create your account. If you do not have a KCTCS email, you can use your personal email.

Make a note of your username and password. You will need it to log in to take the HESI EMS-ADN Exam at the testing center.  If you forget your username, please contact Evolve Support before you show up for your exam.

Create an Account

  1. Go to Evolve.
  2. Select "student".
  3. Enter all the required information.

Already Have an Account

  1. Go to Evolve.
  2. Click "Sign In".
  3. Go to “Account” then “Account Settings” to update your email to your KCTCS email address and associate your account with your institution in the “Institution” tab.
