Gateway To Be Featured In Tom Brokaw Segment On NBC Nightly News March 1
Gateway Community & Technical College will be featured in a segment on NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams Tuesday, March 1, during the 6:30 p.m. broadcast.
The segment, hosted by Tom Brokaw, examines the U.S. manufacturing climate and the
advanced skills needed to work in today's manufacturing environment. The advanced
manufacturing programs Gateway offers and the colleges new Center for Advanced Manufacturing
are featured in the segment.
Brokaw and an NBC production crew visited the center at Gateway's Boone Campus in December to interview Gateway students, President/CEO Ed Hughes and Professor Anthony Clarke, who is also chair of the Manufacturing and Trades Technology Division.
The crew followed student Joe Snyder, who participates in a Gateway-Cincinnati MAG internship program, from leaving home at 5:30 a.m. for his job at Cincinnati MAG through his workday and attending a 6 p.m. manufacturing-related class at Gateway. Brokaw also interviewed officials of Cincinnati MAG.
We are very pleased that a national news outlet is focusing on the new nature of manufacturing, Dr. Hughes said. Todays manufacturing locations are very different from those of years past and require skills in operating and maintaining computer-controlled equipment, as well as an understanding of the entire operation. Those are the skills we teach in our manufacturing programs.
People with the right skills can still find high-paying jobs in manufacturing in this area, Hughes said. The number of manufacturing jobs in the region increased 5 percent in 2010, compared to 2009, and at least seven manufacturing firms announced expansions or new facilities in Northern Kentucky last year.
