Gateway Speech Team Excels at Berea College

Gateway GoThe Gateway Community and Technical College speech team performed very well this weekend at Berea Colleges speech tournament.

The Gateway team of Sawyer Edelbroich and Stewart Newburger competed in novice parliamentary debate and advanced all the way to the semi-finals (top 4) where they lost to the novice parliamentary debate champions, a team from the University of Virginia. There were a total of 37 teams competing in the novice parliamentary debate division.

In addition, Sawyer Edelbroich won fourteenth place in novice parliamentary debate speaker awards out of total of 74 individual competitors, and Katie Curry won sixth place in dramatic interpretation.

The Gateway team we won second place overall in the community college division. This was the first tournament of this forensics season. Overall, I was very happy with how we performed, said Gateway director of forensics and associate professor, Randy DeBerry. I think we have no place to go but up.
