14 Gateway Students Take Honors in Sixth Annual Voices Competition

Fourteen students at Gateway Community & Technical College have won awards of excellence for their work in writing or photography in the colleges sixth annual Voices competition.

The students will be honored at Gateway's Night of Excellence awards convocation May 13 at the Boone Campus. Their work is being published in the Voices literary magazine distributed on campus and online at

The competition is open to all students, and winners are selected by volunteers from Gateway faculty and staff. Winners in the 2014 short story category are Betty Pack of Butler, first place; Chrissy Schmidt, Covington, second place; and Alex Severino, Florence, third place.

Those writing winning essays are Michelle Ball, Covington, first place; Gabrielle Greathouse, Florence, second place; and Rondrea Smith, Bellevue, third place. In the poetry category, winners are Richard Gallagher, Hebron, first place; Stephen Kierein, Fort Thomas, second place; and Heather Byerly, Fort Thomas, third place.

Five winners were named in the photography category. They are Cori Storms, Burlington, first place; Taylor Shields, Edgewood, second place; William Barley, Fort Mitchell, third place; Jake Carpenter, Independence, fourth place; and Brittney Baker, Alexandria, fifth place.
