Meet Matt

After a 25-foot fall, he reevaluated his career and chose Gateway to begin his education in Education.

Matt's Story:

I was doing some construction and accidently stepped off the roof. Hitting the ladder on the way down, I fell down about a 25-foot drop to the decorative, rocky bed below. To my surprise, I was blessed with no broken bones, and I walked away with only a few bruises. This was the event that sparked my interest in changing my career path. Up until then, I had mainly worked construction and machinery jobs.

After the accident, I reconsidered a less physical career. Education seemed to the natural choice. I’ve always enjoyed being around teenagers. I have two daughters in junior high and I just love that age group. I partake in a lot of youth counseling and mentoring. The decision to begin this path at Gateway was an even easier one. The cost of Gateway tuition is so much more affordable than what you find anywhere else. It was also important for me to be able to transfer all of my credits to a university and eventually pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Education; not all colleges offer that.

I also chose Gateway because it is a great transition college. Gateway allowed me to wade in the shallow end of the college experience, instead of just jumping off the deep end. I hope to be at NKU in the next few years, and after I graduate from Gateway, I’ll be prepared to take on the challenges of a larger college. Going back to school, especially at my age, is difficult but not impossible. Education requires many sacrifices, but I believe it will all be worth it. Gateway is a stepping stone to my new career, and I am enjoying the experience and the people I’ve met so far.
