I kind of knew what to expect when I started at Gateway because I transferred from another KCTCS college. I started at Gateway in August of 2010 and am majoring in business management. I plan on transferring to a 4 year college to earn a bachelor’s degree. Eventually I would like to own my own business. The thing I like best about attending Gateway is that the faculty and staff have a passion for what they do. They get excited about what they are teaching which in turn excites students and makes learning fun.
I am also working at Gateway as a work study student which helps pay for tuition. I work in customer service at the coffee cart, which is our first student-run business. I love my job at Gateway because I am a people person and I get to see fellow students every day. The coffee cart is important because the student body is involved in the business process, like voting on the logo. Students like to be a part of something, we like to be involved. I also work as a note taker for students with disabilities and have found that experience very rewarding.
Even though I have only been at Gateway for three months, I feel like I belong here. It’s here that I am gaining experience to tap into my full potential, meeting new people, laughing a lot, having fun and learning new skills. I am married, have a 21-year-old son and volunteer at church so I am very busy. I am a self-proclaimed overachiever: whatever I do I put my whole heart into. I am putting a lot of work into my education and trust in God that I will be successful. My advice to fellow students would be that you have to work hard because education is important, and anything is possible with faith.
